| Anyone that has decided on Square
Foot Gardening has definitely made the best decision in my
opinion. It's just so much easier, less time & space
consuming, and very productive in comparison to traditional row
gardening for the home gardener.
The first thing that I would do is go and buy Mel's book. There are two versions -- the original and the "All New" recently released version. Mel has improved quite a bit in his new version. But the basics are still the same as the original book. The first thing (other than the raised bed structure) is Mel's mix of 1/3 peat, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 vermiculite for the soil. This saves so much time and effort because you're starting your garden with fresh, sterile, no weed seeds or roots soil. That part alone makes this one of the easiest gardening methods in my opinion. First -- you don't have to worry about soil borne diseases (you tomato lovers know what I mean). Second -- you don't have to deal with constant pulling of weeds and digging up their roots either. Third -- you can garden 100% organically with no added fertilizers or herbicides. Please be sure to go and check out our Message Board on the website. This is a great place for more general information, to ask questions, and just learn about this great gardening method from others. |
